About the Position

JustFix is seeking a full-time Director of Product with 5+ years in a senior and/or management position. The ideal candidate has a passion for tenant’s rights and a motivation to join us on our mission to co-design and build data-driven tools for tenants, housing organizers, and legal advocates fighting displacement.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Product will be responsible for leading the organization’s product strategy and product roadmap, managing the Product Team (engineers, designers, user researchers, and product managers), and ensuring our products continue to center the communities we serve. In addition, the Director of Product will work closely with the Deputy Director to facilitate seamless coordination between the Program and Product Teams. The ideal candidate is a forward-thinking senior leader with experience launching digital products. The candidate should have an enthusiasm for continuing to improve upon JustFix’s existing tools as well as developing new tools as our team grows.

JustFix’s team is largely based in New York City. We are currently working remotely due to COVID-19 and will continue to do so until it is safe to return to an office.

Key Responsibilities*

Product Strategy (50%)

  • Partner with the Executive Director and Deputy Director in crafting a strategy to expand the use of JustFix tools in NYC as well as to other cities and states;
  • Ensure alignment and seamless communication between the Product Team (designers, engineers, and product managers) and the Program Team.
  • Drive the roll-out of new products by overseeing product research, design, development, requirements development, and product launch;
  • Plan for and manage the iteration of existing products and features;
  • Create and manage protocols for ensuring that our products are accessible (language accessible, tech accessible, etc.);
  • Manage the deprecation process for tools to ensure that users are directed to new options while maintaining trust with our brand;
  • Deepen protocols to ensure the protection of user data for existing and new tools; and
  • Stay up to date on product development across the organization, identifying dependencies, potential impacts to the Product Team, and opportunities to drive larger impact.

People Management (35%)

  • Partner with Director of Operations to engage in JustFix’s anti-oppressive hiring process for Product Team roles;
  • Onboard Product Team members;
  • Supervise the Product Team members, providing contemporaneous and constructive feedback; and
  • Nurture the professional development of the Product Team by providing individualized guidance and coaching.

Organizational Management Duties (15%)

  • Partner with the Leadership Team (Executive Director, Deputy Director, Director of Operations) to manage organizational decisions and organization-wide initiatives;
  • Lead team meetings and product development discussions as needed; and
  • Take an active role in crafting internal anti-oppressive practices and policies.

Qualities & Skills

Must have:

  • 5+ years of experience in a senior and/or management position organization with experience launching digital products;
  • Experience managing people and creating an anti-oppressive work culture;
  • Motivated by our mission and/or a professional or personal connection to the housing justice movement;
  • Proven track record of launching digital products for diverse audiences;
  • Success in roles requiring execution of multiple tasks while responding to various priorities;
  • Experience with group facilitation (e.g. consensus based decision-making), public speaking, and representing the organization to the media and other stakeholders;
  • Experience and demonstrated skills in working with user groups often underserved by technology and a commitment to community organizing, racial justice, housing justice, or other social justice movements;
  • Strong writing and editing skills;
  • Ability to cultivate relationships with potential partners;
  • Familiarity with project management software and remote work platforms such as Slack, Clubhouse/Shortcut, Airtable, or similar software;
  • Local to NYC or willing to relocate when JustFix returns to in-person operations; and

Nice to have:

  • Interest in civic technology and co-design;
  • Technical experience and/or familiarity with software engineering and product design practices
  • Experience and knowledge of the NYC and NYS political landscape;
  • Experience with tenant organizing and knowledge of the housing justice landscape locally and nationally;
  • Understanding of housing in New York City or nation-wide, including familiarity with housing types, rent regulation, and common challenges tenants face, including repairs, harassment, housing instability, homelessness, and discrimination;
  • Experience in a startup environment (either an actual startup, or an entrepreneurial situation within a larger organization);
  • A connection to the tools we have built and the people who use them; and
  • Fluency (reading, writing, speaking) in Spanish or another language commonly spoken in New York City.

Compensation

Salary is $100,000-110,000 annually for 40 hours a week (full time, exempt) including full health (medical, vision, dental) insurance, and all benefits listed in the “Why Work for JustFix” section.
